What is a Canine Coach

A Canine Coach is a professional dog trainer who specialises in helping dogs with behavioural issues be successful. They work with the dog and family to understand the causes of behaviour and develop a strategy to modify and manage the environment.

What can a Canine Coach assist with?

A Canine Coach can help with challenges such as aggression towards other people or dogs, excessive barking, digging, mouthing, jumping, lead pulling, separation distress and other undesirable behaviours.

What happens during a consultation?

Your Canine Coach will observe your dog in the home environment and inquire about their history, exercise and eating routine, They will then develop a plan to modify the dogs behaviour. It is recommended to rule out medical issues before the consultation.

Is success guaranteed?

Every dog is an individual, therefore the effectiveness of the modification plan depends on several factors, including but not limited to, learned history, genetics, environment and mental health. A further dependency for success is the guardians ability to implement the plan to modify the behaviour. There are no guarantees, we operate on a best endeavor basis.

What does ‘meet your dog where it is at’ mean?

This is a reference to Kim Brophy’s teachings and refers to the four elements to understanding our dogs: learning, environment, genetics, and self. Focusing on this instead of obedience training, leads to happier human-dog relationships.

How many sessions will it take?

Depends on the diagnosis of the behaviour, the prevailing environment, and the guardian’s ability to implement the plan. For simple cases, it is possible to get a result with one session. For complex cases, it may require multiple sessions.

What are the fees?

The fee will vary depending on the suburb, complexity, and the type of coaching required. We recommend a free 10-min chat first to discuss the fees and to make sure we are a good fit for your family and dog.

Why do you need a support team?

Many trainers claim to know everything, however dog behaviour is complex and it’s impossible for one person to know it all. For complex cases, we may consult and refer to specialists, to brainstorm the best behaviour modification plan for your dog.

What does ‘training is broken’ mean?

This refers to traditional dog training models that are based on obedience and commands, regardless of the dog’s temperament, breed or conditions. We focus on getting to know your dog’s learned history, genetics, environment, family members and emotional state before implementing a plan, designed to benefit the guardian and the dog.
